Congratulations are in order; you’re starting a new job. You know what you’re wearing, you’ve worked out your morning commute, and you think you’re pretty much prepared to take over the world. But do you have a notebook in your bag? How about your phone charger?
Read on for a list of things you should pack for your first day at work.
1. A pen and notebook
Depending on how big the company is, you’ll have to remember dozens of names, company procedures, fire exits and passwords. Taking a pen and a notebook will show your employer that you’re prepared.
2. Lunch
It would be great if every company took new employees out for lunch on the first day. But it doesn’t happen everywhere. So bringing some lunch in is a good way to make sure you have something to eat just in case. Additionally, if your first day is super busy and you don’t have time to nip out, the Spaghetti Bolognese you cooked last night will ensure you don’t starve.
3. P45
If you’ve come from a job with another company, you’ll have a P45 that your new employer will need. Your HR department will love how on-the-ball you are and it’s always a good idea to make friends in HR. First day excitement might result in you spending your lunch break telling your mum how amazing your job is. So unless you’re sure that your colleagues will have the same phone as you, you risk going home with a dead battery and not being able to tweet #bestfirstdayever at the end of the day.
5. Strategy Ideas
Before you start your job, jot down a few ideas that you can implement straight away. Ideas you think will benefit your team and the company. How amazing will you look when you whip out your notepad with a list of 10 ways you are hoping to make improvements?
6. Positive Attitude
While you can’t put it in your bag, a positive attitude is the best way to make sure your day goes well. Even if you didn’t get a seat on the tube, or you dropped your untouched coffee on the floor, leave all that negativity at the door and show your new colleagues how happy you are to be there.
