We strive to create a flexible and diverse culture where everyone is included no matter your gender, sexuality, race or disability. Marc tells us about how, even though he works from home, he has been welcomed and supported by his colleagues.
Name:
Marc Daniels
What is your role at Enterprise:
I am a home working Escalations Support Coordinator, whereby I am responsible for providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers with questions related to vehicle rentals.
Interesting fact:
As I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, I celebrated the legislation to allow same-sex marriage in the UK which came in to force in 2014, a year later I got married to my husband, Rhys!
Why do you enjoy working for Enterprise:
I feel that Enterprise is such a great company to work for because I feel right at home! They provide such a diverse workplace and play a big part in LGBTQ+ communities and Pride events across the globe, it’s great!
Tell us a little bit about your career with Enterprise. How did you start and how did you get to where you are now:
I have now worked for Enterprise since November 2015 and I have loved every moment of it. I started as a Sales Agent and have climbed the career ladder to my current role, which enables me to work from home and assist customers with any queries they have. I am a strong believer of starting at the bottom of the ladder and working up. Enterprise has a strong promote from within culture, and their great managers have helped me in my career progression to date.
Did you feel you needed to come out to your colleagues and how did they react:
I didn’t feel the need to ‘come out’ to Enterprise, per se. When I started, I told them that I was married to Rhys. I was never treated differently, and I worked really well with my team. Enterprise’s inclusive culture means that everyone is welcome, and I am proud to work for a company who demonstrates their founding values and presents a policy such as ‘Our doors are open’ for everyone. Since working here, it has been great to see senior management openly express their sexuality and gain the same trust and respect as everyone else.
What has been your experience with being out and being a person who has faced mental health challenges? Have you ever had a particularly bad or good experience?
My experience with being someone who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community has been nothing but positive since being at Enterprise. Regarding mental health, my husband was diagnosed with a neurological disorder over two years ago now and it’s been an uphill struggle for us both. Last year I went on a personal leave of absence due to this happening to us and I am still taking anti-depressants. My husband has now got continuing mental health issues, along with psychosis, which affects us both. Currently, myself and my current manager have weekly catch-ups on how things at home are going and making sure that Rhys and I are OK. Through it all, Enterprise has been very helpful and kind to both of us, making them the best company I have ever worked for.
Who are the LGBT allies that you look up to in the business? How have they helped you:
Everyone; all staff members, managers and senior managers. Everyone who I work with is approachable and an inspiration and it’s incredible to work in such an open and rewarding environment. A work-life balance is particularly important to me and Enterprise has been such a help to my husband and I to achieve this. The fact that I work at home, is such a benefit. My husband and I have attended many hospital and GP appointments since his diagnosis, and I have been able to request shift-swaps and days off to accommodate these appointments, and my managers have always been extremely flexible.
