Your Turn to Interview the Interviewer!

Asking questions at the end of the interview is just as important as answering them. What do I mean by this?  At the conclusion of the interview, the interviewer will ask you, ‘What questions do you have for me?’ Careful, because this last question is just as important as all the others.

The interviewer is gauging your level of interest. If you don’t have any questions, or your questions are weak, a little red flag will raise. Have you paid attention to the discussion, or are you asking about things that have already been covered? Are your questions digging deep or are they very surface level (fluff)? Are the questions geared to help you make a good decision when it comes time to accept the position?

At this point in the process, the interviewer wants you to ask questions. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 5 questions prepared. It is OK to write them down on a notepad and refer to them at the appropriate time. So what should you ask? Here are a few questions to get you started.

  • What are the hours of the position?
  • What is the starting pay?
  • What is the promotional process?
  • When can I expect my first promotion?
  • How is the training covered: on the job or classroom based?
  • How long have you (the interviewer) been here? What was your career path?

As always, you need to put your best foot forward in an interview situation.  Asking good questions will help you stand out from the other applicants.
