How I’m Building a Career Through an Apprenticeship

Macey-Willcox

As a second-year apprentice in the role of Member Services Associate at Enterprise Mobility, Macey’s brings a unique perspective that highlights the value of practical training whilst working towards a qualification. In this blog, she shares her journey, offering insights into the world of apprenticeships, how they’ve contributed to her professional development, and why she believes hands-on experience is essential for achieving success.

Can you tell us a little bit more about you and your background?
I finished my GCSEs during COVID in 2021, meaning my results were based on teacher assessment and in-class exams. After that, I enrolled in college for a two-year business course, where I achieved a Level 3 BTEC in business with distinction star (D*). Instead of going to university, I decided an apprenticeship was the best option for me, as it allowed me to learn and apply that knowledge simultaneously in the workplace.

What stood out about Enterprise Mobility?
I did a lot of research on apprenticeships, but what Enterprise Mobility offered stood out the most. What really caught my attention was the clear path for progression and ability to pursue multiple official qualifications. I wanted professional growth and hands-on experience in a fast-growing industry, and Enterprise Mobility offered exactly that.

The chance to gain real-world experience was a key factor in my decision to pursue an apprenticeship – being able to apply academic and theoretical knowledge in a practical setting is how I learn best.  At the same time, working alongside experienced professionals has given me invaluable insights, technical skills, and business acumen that aren’t always easily gained in a classroom setting.

The apprenticeship not only helps me build a strong foundation in business but also allows me to contribute to the organisation’s larger goals. Plus, Enterprise Mobility’s commitment to employee development reassures me that there are several opportunities for growth and progression.

What advice would you give someone starting an apprenticeship?
Ask plenty of questions, be curious, and appreciate the small tasks – they’ll teach you more than you realise. Get involved wherever you can, even in little things like a catch-up coffee morning or sitting in on another teams meeting.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself!  Talk to as many people as possible and learn from those around you. And remember, it’s okay to make mistakes - as long as you learn from them.

How would you describe the culture at Enterprise Mobility and what makes it unique?
Enterprise Mobility's culture it built on prioritising both customers and team members, which has played a big role in their success. It’s a culture of honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic - but we also know how to have fun along the way. Innovation and collaboration are highly valued, and everyone is encouraged to contribute new ideas. This balance of hard work and fun sets the organisation apart and keeps things moving forward.

How would you say the values at Enterprise Mobility align with your own?Enterprise Mobility’s 8 founding values align closely with my own. First, the emphasis on honesty and integrity – I believe these are the foundation of any successful relationship, both professionally and personally. Second, the focus on hard work and recognition– I take great pride in being dedicated and putting in the effort to achieve my goals. Being able to celebrate successes and thrive in a fun environment makes the journey even more rewarding.

How does Enterprise Mobility support your professional development and ongoing learning?
Throughout my apprenticeship at Enterprise Mobility, the organisation has provided support for my professional development and continuous learning. I’ve had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, applying what I learn in real-world situations.

Mentorship has also played a key role, with experienced team members offering valuable advice, feedback and guidance to help refine my skills. I’ve had access to training programmes, workshops, and both internal and external courses that align with my future goals.

The collaborative culture means I’m constantly learning from my teammates – exchanging ideas and growing alongside them.

What are some key skills or knowledge you've developed the most since joining the apprenticeship program?
Since joining Enterprise Mobility's customer service apprenticeship programme, I've developed and strengthened several key skills.

First and foremost, my communication skills have improved significantly - for example I can now answer customer queries clearly and efficiently, both in person and over the phone, without needing frequent assistance. I've also learnt to problem solve effectively and think on my feet, as any customer queries often require quick attention and creative solutions.

Additionally, I've gained a deeper understanding of the importance of empathy in customer service, helping me build stronger connections with customers. My time management skills have also improved, as I've learned to juggle multiple tasks while maintaining high-quality service.

Overall, this apprenticeship has given me a strong foundation of customer service, along with a strong work ethic and adaptability.

What's been the most fulfilling part of your apprenticeship in terms of the impact you're able to make?
The most fulfilling part of my apprenticeship has been the ability to directly impact a customer’s experience and make a real difference in their day. Working across different teams has given me the opportunity to interact with a variety of customers, including corporate, retail and insurance customers.

Speaking with customers directly - offering advice, guidance, and excellent service - has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing how my work improves the service we provide every day reinforces the impact I can make.

What kind of legacy do you hope to leave through the work you're doing here?
I hope to leave a legacy of dedication, ambition, and perseverance. Despite being diagnosed with a neurological condition, I want to show that it doesn't define my ability to learn, grow, and succeed. My goal is to prove that challenges can be overcome with determination and hard work and that anyone can reach their potential, no matter the obstacles they face.

I want to be remembered for my commitment to developing my skills, contributing to the team, and continuously pushing myself to achieve more. By staying dedicated to my work and always striving to improve, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own challenges and pursue their goals with the same level of ambition and resilience.
