Translate your experience to get the job you want

So… the time has finally come for a lot of you to start applying for industrial placements or graduate schemes. I bet a big question a lot of you will be asking is – ‘what if I have no experience in the automotive industry?’ or ‘What if my degree has no correlation to start a career with Enterprise?’ Well, you’re lucky, I have an answer!

The good news is that here at Enterprise we welcome students from all types of degree disciplines. So, if you’ve realised that a potential career in chemistry or geography is no longer for you then we have opportunities for you! I’m currently working towards a Business Management degree but many of my colleagues come from a range of different degree backgrounds from Sports and Exercise Science to Sociology; our Managing Director of the UK & Ireland studied Micro-Biology!

Not worried about your degree being the issue, but you feel like you lack actual experience? Don’t worry, we understand that it’s not possible to come out of University having all of the experience possible in the world. We are looking for transferrable skills and competencies; people with a great passion to deliver customer service, who can showcase great leadership skills and have an aptitude for sales. This means that you will need to translate the experience you do have. Demonstrate leadership by sharing your experience of leading a sports team. Show teamwork by describing the role you took in a university society. Explain how your part-time job in a restaurant helped develop your customer service skills, or how up-selling items whilst working in retail means that you are great at sales! All of your experience is valid and should be noted down when applying for a job. Little experience doesn’t mean no experience.

Remember, there is nothing here at Enterprise that can’t be taught. Our training and development programme is a mix of formal classroom settings to on-the-job training and mentorship, so you will never be in short supply of opportunities to hone your skills or prepare for advancement. Some of the benefits of working for Enterprise include the fact that we work hard and reward hard work, we have a promote-from-within culture and we’re a fun and friendly place where teamwork rules!

If you’ve finished reading this with slightly less doubt about whether the job is fit for you then what are you waiting for? Search and apply to our Placement or Graduate Management programme.
